MANATEE -- IMG Academy defeated Hialeah Champagnat Catholic on Friday in one of the strangest football games in recent memory.
With six minutes left in the second quarter, a player from each teach got into a scuffle, which led to flags flying and both players being ejected.
Before anything could be resolved, though, Champagnat Catholic grabbed its belongings and headed for the buses, forfeiting the game, which IMG led 48-8 at the time.
"I've been around football for a long time and have never seen anything like that before," Ascenders head coach Chris Weinke said.
The Lions may have been afraid to lose one of their players for next week's playoffs following the ejection.
IMG (9-1) was clicking on all cylinders prior to the forfeit, scoring a touchdown on all seven of its possessions.
Tony Jones scored from 17 yards out on the Ascenders' first play from scrimmage.
The Lions wanswered as Antonio Estrada made an amazing jump-ball catch and took it in from 82 yards out.
IMG struck back on its following offensive possession as Jack Wegher scored on a 58-yard touchdown run. Taven Birdow had a 4-yard touchdown run himself, giving the trio 30 touchdowns on the season.
"We have some special kids, and I'm excited for them as they play at the next level," Weinke said.
Senior Deondre Francois and Florida State commit finished with two touchdown passes, both to K.J. Osborn.
"Coach just preached to us to execute, and we were able to do that tonight," Osborn said.
Following a loss to St John's College (D.C.) in the season opener, the Ascenders ran off nine straight wins with a plus-20 turnover margin.
They capped off one of the toughest schedules in the nation, with 10 regular-season opponents finishing a combined (92-31) in 2013.
"It was a special year for us, in our second year of this program," coach Weinke said.
