Following is a capsule look at region golf tournaments involving area high school teams and individual players. The top two teams and top two individuals not on advancing teams at each region will advance to the state tournament.
Class 3A-Region 5
Where: Plantation Golf and Country Club, Fort Myers (boys); Bradenton Country Club (girls)
When: Boys, 8:30 a.m. Monday; girls, 9 a.m. Monday
Area teams: Lakewood Ranch (boys and girls), Manatee
Area individuals: Andrew Hammett (Braden River), Chandler Hammett (Braden River), Richard Bennett (Manatee)
Noteworthy: Lakewood Ranch's quest for a fifth straight boys region title will be a tough task with Lithia Newsome in the field. The two teams faced each other in the Qdoba Tournament of Champions, where Newsome was five shots better. Newsome's Tyler Bakich had a 68 in districts as the team posted a 304, which was 12 shots better than the Mustangs' district output. Braden River's Andrew Hammett took medalist honors with a 73 in districts and should compete for a state tournament berth. The girls side is the lone tournament in Manatee or Sarasota counties. Manatee is the host, and the Donald Ross design is a special treat for Hurricane golfers Gianna and Gabrielle Tomeo, who are members at BCC. They're fighting for a state tournament berth as individuals and as a team against district champs Venice and region competitors such as Plant City (District 13 champs, 339 total) and Naples Gulf Coast (District 15 champs, 352 total). The Canes had a 357 at districts.
Class 2A-Region 7
Where: Port Charlotte Golf Club (boys); Hunters Ridge, Naples (girls)
When: Boys, 8:30 a.m. Tuesday; girls, 11:30 a.m. Wednesday
Area teams: Palmetto (boys and girls)
Area individuals: William Kelly (Southeast), Matt Everhart (Southeast), Nina Lang (Southeast)
Noteworthy: This region will make it difficult for the locals to advance. Palmetto's boys were district champs with a 345, which ranks as the seventh-best score among the nine teams scheduled to compete. The Tigers' girls team earned the final berth from their district with a third-place showing.
Class 1A-Region 6
Where: Verandah Golf Club, Fort Myers (boys); Hibiscus, Naples (girls)
When: Boys, 10 a.m. Tuesday; girls 10 a.m. Monday
Area teams: Saint Stephen's (boys and girls), Bradenton Christian (boys), Out-of-Door Academy (girls), Cardinal Mooney (girls)
Area individuals: Max Coutsolioutsos (ODA), Kyle Jarrett (Cardinal Mooney), Maddy Cusack (BCS)
Noteworthy: Saint Stephen's lost the boys district championship by one shot to Sarasota Christian, while Bradenton Christian snagged third place. The Falcons' top player, Jack Cen, took second at the Donald Ross Memorial Invitational and was second at the district. BCS senior Philip Knowles was the district medalist and is seeking a third straight state tournament appearance. The Saint Stephen's girls were one of only three teams competing at the district, so the Falcons qualified automatically. The Falcons still boast a top team expected to compete for the region crown with sisters Michelle and Vanessa Yan leading the way.
