Fans from Bradenton and Tampa Cambridge Christian were excited for their first Class 2A-District 5 game of the season, but had to wait an extra day because of poor weather.
When the game finally began, Bradenton Christian defeated Cambridge Christian 30-7 behind its defense and star player Sinclair Laskett.
Kickoff was moved from Friday night to Saturday night. It was unclear if the delay threw both teams off their routines or if it was nerves but neither team could get its offense going in the first half.
"No matter what level you play at, when it comes to football it's all about routine," Bradenton Christian head coach Allan Gerber said of the delay. "I'm just proud of my guys; we started slow but finished strong."
Cambridge Christian quarterback Garrett Young, a dual threat, couldn't hit his open receivers consistently. Young seemed to be harried by the front line of Bradenton Christian.
"When you play against a quarterback like Young. you have to play a two-high shell and get pressure up front," Gerber said.
The first half ended with Bradenton Christian leading 3-0 on a Garrett Moshier 36-yard field goal with 10:07 left in the second quarter.
The third quarter made up for the lack of scoring in the first half.
Laskett scored three of his four touchdowns in the quarter. The first was a 2-yard touchdown run after he gained 38 yards on the play before.
A little less then two minutes later, Joey Giardina connected with Laskett for a 74-yard touchdown pass.
Laskett wasn't done yet, though. He got the Bradenton Christian fans on their feet when be punched in a 12-yard touchdown run, putting them up 30-0 at the end of the third quarter.
"They zoned in on me in the first half, so at halftime I made adjustments and was able to hit the open spots," Laskett said.
Not only did Laskett rush for three touchdowns and catch one, he had the interception to ice the game with 33.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
"I'm an athlete, and I like playing both sides of the ball. Makes me versatile for my team," Laskett said.
Young finally got it going in the fourth quarter, connecting with Nick Stein for a 73-yard touchdown.
Following the touchdown with 10:48 left in the fourth quarter, the game was delayed 30 minutes by lightning.
After the game resumed, it got a bit chippy between the teams.
The Bradenton Christian defense was able to keep the pressure on Young, forcing him out of the pocket and into bad decisions.
With the win, Bradenton Christian is 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in their district.
