Scholar-athletes at Lakewood Ranch stand atop the Florida Class 6A state Academic Team Champions standings after the winter season, according to Florida High School Athletic Association figures released Tuesday.
Bolstered by a first-place finish in boys basketball, the Mustangs have 90 points, four more than second-place Fort Myers. Those two schools own a wide margin over third-place Naples Barron-Collier, which has 44 points. The schools accrue points through the spring sports season, and a champion will be named at the end of the school year.
Lakewood Ranch's boys basketball team compiled a team grade-point average of 3.370, the best in the state in Class 6A. The Mustangs finished second in their respective classes in girls basketball, girls soccer, wrestling and competitive cheerleading. Each of Lakewood Ranch's winter sports placed in the top 10.
The only other area school in the top 10 is Saint Stephen's, which is tied for second place with 37 points in Division 2A. Fort Myers Southwest Florida Christian leads the class with 55 points.
