Bradenton Christian's regular-season opener this Friday night seemed like a tall order at first, considering the Panthers are coming off a 44-0 thumping by Cardinal Mooney and the fact that Lakeland Christian boasts T.J. Simmons, a sophomore running back that amassed nearly 1,500 yards to go with 20 touchdowns in 2011.
However, the Lakeland Ledger reported on Thursday that Simmons is done for the season after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in last week's Kickoff Classic.
The Panthers will still need to remedy the offensive woes against the Cougars, where they totaled only 79 yards between passing and rushing.
But a huge weapon for the Vikings is no longer a threat, and BCS' defensive unit limited Mooney workhorse tailback Anthony Caiazzo to just 48 rushing yards.
The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Lakeland.
