LPGA Tour Q-School is coming to the area next week, when the second stage takes place at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice.
The tournament begins Tuesday and concludes Friday on both the Panther and Bobcat courses. The top 80 scores and ties advance to the final stage in Daytona in early December.
There are several local players scheduled to compete, including Lakewood Ranch alum Ericka Schneider, Manatee alum Jennifer Neville and IMG Academy's Ginger Howard, Mia Piccio and Laetitia Beck.
The West Florida Golf Tour, fresh off its Summer Series where it awarded bonuses for PGA Tour Latinoamerica Q-School, has canceled its first major of the new season. The WFGT originally planned a four-day major this week at Laurel Oak Country Club. However, heavy rain -- approximately 7 inches -- made conditions unplayable by the WFGT and the course. The event was called off Wednesday, and the WFGT said on its website that it will refund any players who prepaid the tournament.
The Lakewood Ranch Invitational, showcasing top high school boys golf teams from around the state, takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club. Lithia Newsome, Port Orange Spruce Creek and Palm Beach Gardens Benjamin will be in attendance in addition to area clubs such as Venice, Riverview and Sarasota Christian.
