SCF rallies late, but suffers 7th straight defeat
BRADENTON -- State College of Florida dug itself a hole that proved a little too steep to climb out of Wednesday in dropping a 97-90 men's basketball game to Victory Rock Academyt at Hal Chasey Gymnasium.
SCF trailed 77-63 with nine minutes left after the Blue Devils hit the Manatees with a barrage of 3-pointers.
SCF tightened up its defense and eventually tied the score at 90 with 1:15 left on a layup by Gabriel Dos Santos. Unfortunately it was the Manatees last basket of the night.
Khalil Small, who led Victory Rock with 25 points, drove in for a layup. After SCF missed a 3-pointer, the Blue Devils hit a free throw and then a basket following a Manatees turnover.
It was the seventh loss for SCF, which is still looking for its first victory under new head coach Elliot Washington. Victory Rock is 8-2.
"We definitely didn't close out well on the three tonight, which has been a point of emphasis in every practice along with containing ball penetration," Washington said. "We have to do a better job on both so it kind of put us in limbo. We played hard, but made too many mistakes at crucial times. Victory shot the ball well and we were 5 for 28 on threes.
"We had an opportunity to win the ball game. But if you are not going to capitalize off their miscues it's going to be a tough night."
Dos Santos led all scorers with 28 points and had seven assists, four rebounds and three steals. Deonte Hearns led the Manatees on the boards with 15 rebounds and tallied 20 points.
For SCF, Tre'Bryant had 12 points, Larry Keys added 10 and 6-10 big man Emmanuel Pellot chipped in nine points and hauled in eight rebounds.
