Women’s tennis: SCF off to hot start at nationals
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The State College of Florida women’s tennis team won six of the seven matches it played Sunday during the opening day of the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.
The Manatees scored 12 points and stand tied for seventh behind leader Temple College (18 points).
No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Laurence Porry and Mariana Palacios, respectively, won in straight sets. Porry, who is seeded second, defeated Kristin DeBruyn of Muskegon Community College 6-2, 6-1. Palacios, seeded third, won 6-0, 6-0 over Ashley Boender of Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

At No. 3 singles, Ann Sophie Porry claimed a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Adalyn Hazelman of New Mexico Military Institute. Lacey Lapp, SCF’s No. 5 singles player, won 6-1, 6-2 over Mandy Collins of Itawamba Community College. SCF’s lone loss came at No. 6 singles, where Braden River’s Lauren Bock fell 6-4, 6-2 to Jazmine Burt of New Mexico Military Institute.
SCF’s first and second doubles teams also earned straight-set victories. Laurence Porry and Palacios, the third seed at No. 1 doubles, defeated a team from Collin College 6-3, 6-1. Ann Sophie Porry and Juliette Smith got a 6-3, 6-3 win over a team from Johnson County at No. 2 doubles.
All of Sunday’s matches were in the round of 32. The tournament continues through Thursday.
