San Jacinto (Texas) College-North scored five runs in the first inning and five more in the seventh to beat State College of Florida 13-5 on the opening day of the JUCO World Series on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colo.
The game was called after seven innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Manatees ace Alex Burgos was touched up for five runs in the first, including a grand slam to right fielder Riley Hornback. Burgos lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowed eight runs, all earned.
Austin Chubb and Tyler Rocklein hit back-to-back homers for SCF in the fourth inning.
The Manatees will face Chattanooga (Tenn.) State College in a loser’s bracket game at noon today. CSC lost 15-3 to Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College earlier Saturday.
