Kevin Newman had more than 200 yards of total offense and a touchdown, and Vincent Testaverde, the son of former NFL quarterback Vinny Testaverde, passed for two touchdowns to lead Tampa Jesuit to its first victory 31-7 over Lakewood Ranch on Friday night.
Lakewood Ranch's lone touchdown came on a botched snap to quarterback/punter Chad Rex that the junior managed to scoop up off the ground and toss to James Jeffcoat, who made several defenders miss en route to a 77-yard score that gave the Mustangs a 7-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Jesuit finished the game with 28 unanswered points.
Lakewood Ranch's Brandon Luckett, a junior defensive back, recovered a fumble and picked off a pass in the third quarter for the Mustangs (1-1).
IMG ACADEMY 30, NORTH MIAMI BEACH 15 -- The Ascenders waited out a long weather delay, then rolled to the victory, improving to 2-0.
CLEARWATER CALVARY CHRISTIAN 43, OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 7 -- The visiting Thunder fell to 0-2 despite 101 yards rushing from Jason Fineburg.
ODA's lone score came on a 35-yard runs from Trent Radigan.
SCHEDULE CHANGE -- ODA's next football game has been rescheduled. The game at Booker, originally scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13, has been changed to Thursday, Sept. 12.
The Thunder will face the Tornadoes with a scheduled 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
OUT-OF-DOOR ACADEMY 3, SARASOTA CHRISTIAN 2 -- Lauren Maxey racked up 21 kills and 19 digs as the visiting Thunder squeaked past the Blazers 21-25, 26-24, 25-15, 19-25, 15-13.
ODA also got 16 kills, 17 digs and three aces from Natalie Buffett and 43 perfect passes and 37 digs from Cameron Graham. Monica Costa added 40 assists and five blocks.
