n The West Florida Golf Tour had a few events in the past week as the “Race to the Ritz” competition, which pits the top 12 on the money list in a match-play event for the PGA Tour’s Q-School entry fee as the top prize, heats up.
Former Lakewood Ranch High standout Seath Lauer partnered with his former Florida State University teammate Tommy Rymer in carding a 10-under par 62 to win the tour’s first-ever two-man at Old Corkscrew Golf Club last Friday. The pair won $1,000 for their scorching round at the difficult Naples course.
On Sunday, Joey Lamielle won $750 for his victory at Heritage Oaks Golf & Country Club in Sarasota.
Never miss a local story.
Lamielle, who is atop the WFGT’s Order of Merit, posted a 7-under 65 for a one-shot victory.
And on Monday, Zoltan Veress (4-under-par 68) edged four players -- including Lamielle -- to claim a one-shot victory at the Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club. He collected $1,000.
n Lakewood Ranch High freshman Danny Walker shot a 73 to win the boys 16-18 division in the GSJGA’s Glenn McClain Memorial Winter Tournament Series event at Heron Creek Golf & Country Club in North Port on Sunday.
Bradenton’s Eric Verbeke joined Walker as a fellow Manatee County winner in the tournament.
He shot an 85 in the boys 12-and-younger division, which was shortened to 16 holes.
n Bradenton’s Jordan Lippetz had the best showing among county players at the Florida Junior Tour’s 16-18-year-old tournament at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando over the weekend. Lippetz finished fourth -- five shots back of the winner -- after a 148 total in the 36-hole event.
