BRADENTON — Calling all wrestlers with aspirations of being a warrior on the mat. Weekend Warrior Kickoff Wrestling Camp opens today at Southeast High.
The camp ends Sunday.
The honorary guest and teacher will be 1988 U.S. Olympian Ken Chertow, a former Ohio State and Penn State coach.
“He’s going to bring a winning attitude,” Seminoles assistant wrestling coach Cezar Sharbono said. “His intensity level and overall coaching ability is something that you don’t really see down here in Florida all that often.”
Chertow has run a wrestling camp at Stetson University in DeLand for six years, and Sharbono has known Chertow for four years and works on Chertow’s staff during camps.
Camp attendants will learn take down attacks, top-and-bottom escapes and pinning combinations.
“You name it, we are going to teach it,” Sharbono said.
The camp is for wrestlers age 6 to 18 years, and Sharbono said he expects at least 40 kids. The cost is $25 per session or $200 for the weekend, including lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
“We got so many schools within the local community, not just Sarasota and Bradenton, but even the Tampa area that we are trying to pull from that are big wrestling schools,” Sharbono said. “Saint Stephen’s is having a wrestling team for the first time ever, and they are bringing their whole team over.”
