Saint Stephen’s volleyball team didn’t let go of the one of the most successful seasons in team history without a fight Wednesday night.

The Falcons fell to host Fort Myers Canterbury 3-2, losing by scores 22-25, 25-21, 26-24, 24-26, 15-9 during a Class 2A-Region 3 quarterfinal.

Saint Stephen’s (20-6) was down 23-18 in Game 4 before a save by defensive libero Brooke Cornetet turned the momentum, said Nancy Cothron.

But Canterbury pulled away in Game 5 on the strength of six straight kills by Christina Carracino.

“Nice year,” said Cothron, whose Falcons set the program’s single-season record for wins.

Senior Maggie Holbert had 35 assists and five aces.

She has been at Saint Stephen’s since third grade, which is also when she started playing club ball under Cothron.

“It’ll be fun to watch her play in college,” the coach said.

Morgan Johnson had 12 kills and four aces, Melissa Johnson had 10 kills and 3 three aces, Alyssa Allen had eight kills and Tori Biach added six blocks and five kills.

“We had girls who played with heart,” Cothron said. “The plus side of Saint Stephen’s is I get to watch these girls grow, not just into volleyball players, but into young women.

“This group of seniors really tugs at my heart. They’re a dedicated group.”
