Editor’s note: The Bradenton Herald allows candidates who did not receive the Editorial Board’ recommendation the opportunity to respond.
Dan Fiorini, Florida House, District 70
The Herald’s recent endorsement of Wengay Newton, touting his years on the St. Petersburg City Council as qualification for state representative, is rather odd considering he did not produce one serious legislative proposal in that time. In fact, he likes to brag that he was on the losing end of most votes.
Of the three in this race, I am the only one with actual Tallahassee legislative experience. You failed to point out my position as a legislative aide, where I passed important legislation concerning sexual predators and licensure of people convicted of sex crimes. Unlike Mr. Newton, I know the legislative and appropriations process. I do not need on-the-job training. My years as a municipal human services planner, businessman, union organizer and nonprofit director were completely overlooked.
Never miss a local story.
I am not a career politician jumping from one government job to another. I am a businessman.
Mr. Newton has taken thousands of dollars in special interest money. I have not. You laud Newton’s environmental knowledge. Yet, when the Democratic Environmental Caucus had a choice, they chose to endorse me over Mr. Newton due my background and expertise on the environment.
My endorsements are people based and include: National Organization for Women (NOW), the Democratic Progressive Caucus, National Women’s Political Caucus and the Tampa Bay for Bernie organization. Personal endorsements include: St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman, City Council Representatives Karl Nurse and Lisa Wheeler-Bowman, all of whom know my experience and background in Tallahassee will be a valuable asset.
While you are entitled to your opinion, the fact remains that I am the only candidate in this race with the knowledge and experience to effectively represent the people of District 70. I encourage your readers to review my background at www.DanForDistrict70.com.
Thank you for the opportunity to respond.
