Reading about Rep. Greg Steube's obsession with allowing students to carry concealed weapons on college campuses, I have to wonder who, besides the gun lobby, is clamoring for this legislation. It is not the teachers or administrators. It's not law enforcement.
That leaves only students and parents.
I haven't seen any poll numbers tilting toward concealed-carry on campus. In fact, a survey conducted by Ball State University in 2014 of over 1,600 students at 15 Midwest colleges showed that 80 percent of the students don't want guns on campus.
This bill is a solution looking for justification that just isn't there. It is also arrogant for Mr. Steube to presume that he has the backing of the residents of Florida to pursue such a controversial law.
Never miss a local story.
Sensible people should pause and consider the possible scenarios, maybe even deadly, before starting down this path. The prospect of students carrying concealed guns on campus should be cause for concern for classmates, parents, teachers, and certainly, prospective students and their families. It is a bad idea and a bad bill that should be permanently shelved.
