Federal funding of transportation projects will cease in July. While I am happy that Congress has extended the Highway Trust Fund until then, I urge them to attack this issue head-on to find a long-term solution to highway funding.
America is a great country, and her greatness depends largely on her intricate system of roadways. They are the vital veins and arteries of our economic system.
Keeping these highways repaired and up to safety standards is crucial. It would be terrible to see a sharp rise in traffic accidents should there be a lack of funding for maintenance.
There is also the economic risk of losing jobs that thousands of Americans rely upon to take care of their families.
Leading America is a tough job, but we elect leaders with faith that they are up to the task.
Republicans in Congress are accomplishing more than we have seen in a long time. I especially want to thank area Congressmen Gus Bilirakis, Vern Buchanan, David Jolly, Tom Rooney, and Dennis Ross for voting for the short-term extension.
With this can-do mentality, I am hopeful that they can find an answer to this problem as well.
