I was delighted by last week's front-page coverage of the oarsmen from Yale. Thank you very much for it.
As a former competitive oarsman (now several decades ago !), I was very keen to see these crews, and was not disappointed when I went Saturday to the Rowing Center at Fort Hamer. I was fortunate to meet Coach Gladstone and several of his oarsmen just before they went on the water.
It was interesting to note some major differences between today's rowing equipment and that which was in widespread use during my rowing years. Coach Gladstone and I are of similar "vintage" and had similar recollections in that regard.
What a fine group of young men; a pleasure to meet and exuding much keenness and enthusiasm. They were very complimentary of Fort Hamer's facilities -- indeed, the entire setting for their training here.
I wish them a fruitful 10 days and hope to see them again.
