I am responding to Mike McLeod's letter vilifying the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards Initiative involved governors and state education commissioners from 48 states, two territories, and the District of Columbia. The standards were designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators.
The standards were adopted by the National Governors Association for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers, a non-partisan, nationwide, non-profit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education.
I have made at least five references to educators and zero references to the federal government. Former governor Jeb Bush supports Common Core.
For Mike McLeod to relate these education standards to the horrors of Hitler and Nazi Germany is downright scurrilous.
Teachers are teaching math, reading, writing, economics, history and the rest of the subjects mentioned by Mike McLeod. Step into a classroom and observe firsthand that there is no brainwashing going on. There is teaching going on -- that's what we do.
