I have never been more appalled about a letter to the editor as I was when I read Dr. Adrian Krieg's uninformed comments about firefighters!
Dr. Krieg, if you are upset about your taxes, then please stay on that topic; attacking the profession is pure ignorance on your part.
Go live that life for an extended period of time and then report back to the people. I think you would change your battle cry.
How would you like to be awakened from a sound sleep by a loud alarm, go from complete calm to racing heartbeat in zero flat? Now extend that out over a career and that happening to you many times every night you work. There is a reason the life expectancy for firefighters is way below national averages.
Never miss a local story.
I was a career firefighter, retired after 31 years of service. If I sleep more than two hours at a time, I consider that a great victory.
As far as retiring early or at a younger age, let me give you a personal firefighter thoughts as they age. You are not as young as you used to be, your body does not respond like you wish it would, you have countless fears of letting your fellow firefighters down, and the ultimate fear of not being able to save someone, or even one of your own firefighter brothers. Now if you want to complain about your taxes, then please do, but attacking the firefighter profession shows me you are a very uninformed person!
