Manatee commissioners:Let garbage haulers bid on contracts
Originally published on Sept. 13
As a taxpayer in Manatee County, I feel strongly that the county must put the $140 million waste haulers contracts out to bid.
Waste Management has done a good job in our neighborhood, but this industry has become very competitive in the last few years and the only way to know for sure if taxpayers' monies are being spent wisely is to put it out for competitive bid.
Never miss a local story.
Hillsborough County put their contracts out to bid and saved $10 million a year.
Another reason to put it out for bid is to avoid even the appearance of any undue influence of campaign contributions from these waste haulers on the commissioners' decision.
A review of the Manatee County Supervisor of Elections website shows that Waste Management made the maximum legally allowable contributions to the last campaigns of five of the seven current county commissioners (only Vanessa Baugh and Michael Gallen received no contributions from them).
Please do the right, and ethical, thing and put it out bid.
