If our democracy is going to work for all of us, then all of us must do our part. All elections affect each of us.
Yes, it takes time and effort on our part to learn how each candidate or issue affects our own lives. Then we must cast our vote for the best choice.
A wise friend shared his perceptions of why the best person may not win. The challenger works harder to win. Many voters believe that of course the best person will win so why go to the polls and vote.
In 2010, two new Manatee County commissioners, Robin DiSabatino and Michael Gallen, went to work to do a great job of basing their votes and efforts to best serve the interests of we the public.
Commissioner DiSabatino won her race on Aug. 26. Commissioner Gallen lost on Aug. 26. Many people were sure he would win.
Only 20 percent of registered voters really voted.
Many of Commissioner Gallen's supporters did not vote. This is a tragic loss for all of Manatee County.
Commissioners Gallen and DiSabatino set a new standard for the Manatee County commission. Thank you both for a job well done.
I hope that many of you will join me in being better informed about each election and voting in all future elections. Please encourage your friends and family to join you in voting every election.
