This is in response to Mr. David Miller. I have nothing but the highest admiration for Israel and its people. Its contributions to civilization are above and beyond. However, I fear that Israel has fallen prey to an imperialistic regime.
I do not defend Hamas. But, to be fair, here are some statements made by prominent leaders in Israel:
In a 2010 video, Netanyahu is heard saying, "I deceived U.S. to destroy the Oslo accords." Deputy Prime Minister (Shas) Eli Yishai on Nov. 17, 2012: "We must blow Gaza back to the Middle Ages, destroying all the infrastructure including roads and water."
From Wikipedia: "Israeli settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories are illegal according to International Law (Fourth Geneva Convention).
In defiance, Israel claims that document does not apply to the occupied territories. The UN Security Council, the Red Cross, and the International Court of Justice, among others, have all affirmed that the Fourth Geneva Convention does apply."
Wikipedia: "Under the 2005 disengagement plan, Israel retained control over Gaza's airspace, seaports, and most of its water supply, electricity, and communications."
Hamas has agreed to peace talks if Israel will lift the siege as stated in the two lines above. Israel will not agree to that.
OK, you are living in a country that has been under a rigid siege for seven years by another country that, in the eyes of most of the world, is in violation of international law.
What would you do? Do you sit idly by and watch your country disappear in a maze of Israeli settlements or do you go down in a blaze of rockets?
Of course there's always that pie in the sky - respect for international law and a return to the 1967 boundaries.
