What is the function of our local government in providing health care to the citizens of Manatee County? What is our local government's responsibility?
What answer I received seemed to be ... from Chicken Little. We are running out of money to provide health care and need to increase taxes.
I thought we just defeated a tax increase. Shouldn't our government provide us with accountability? Wouldn't we all like to have more confidence and transparency in our government? The answer is yes.
I would like to see transparency in county contracts and audits for health care, not to mention all contracts. Maybe we can see how much our county is spending.
Why, for instance, when the cost of a simple chest X-ray varies -- at Blake Medical Center, $304; at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, $164, and yet at Manatee Surgical Center it's only $29. Why?
How much is our county paying? Is it $30, $300, or even $3,000? Without transparency, we will never know.
Groups are out there who want to increase your tax burden to pay for programs without accountability. Why?
It's easy to throw other people's money to the wind. Why do we as a community not speak up and make changes to our government?
This is our government. It doesn't belong to someone else. It is ours!
Yet our community will be silent and still will not vote. We each have a responsibility to ask hard questions of ourselves and our officials. A vote is a voice.
We need to all vote. We need to act. We need to elect officials who are forward thinkers.
If you are concerned about tax increases, missing funds in school board contracts, charter school cuts, or even illegals working within our own government, then get out, speak up, and vote.
