After reading Peggy Martin's Aug. 3 letter, one certainly has to ask if any of her comments are true. If true, why was Dr. Mary Cantrell offered her job back in the presence of Superintendent Rick Mills?
After working with Mary Cantrell for the past 18 years, I believe we are most fortunate to have a candidate with her character, skill set and success running for the school board.
We hear a great deal about "turn around" these days. Having worked with Mary Cantrell, I can attest to the fact she not only turned around Manatee Technical Institute, she put MTI and Manatee district schools on the map as having one of the premier technical schools in the United States.
While knowing Dr. Cantrell as a successful educational leader, I did not know her personal story until recently when I heard her speak at a candidate's forum. There I learned she was raised in a Texas orphanage. Inspired by two of her teachers, she chose to enter the teaching profession and literally worked her way through school, obtaining a Ph.D.
Her drive to inspire, teach and motivate young people led her to vocational/technical education.
It is well known vocational/technical students have too long been in the forgotten group in education. Mary Cantrell has brought them to the forefront in Manatee County.
It will be that dedication to children and the development of their God-given skills that will make her a good school board member. Join me in supporting Mary Cantrell, and most importantly, vote on Aug. 26.
