I am deeply concerned about the recent devastating violence in Israel and Gaza. The U.S. should call for further steps toward peace. To ensure any cease-fire will be durable for the long term, we must call on the Israeli government to lift the blockade and cease their attacks on innocents in Gaza.
As President Obama stated six years ago in the aftermath of Israel's military offensive Operation Cast Lead, "as part of a lasting cease-fire, Gaza's border crossings should be open to allow the flow of aid and commerce."
As part of long-term diplomatic engagement, the U.S. should also hold all sides accountable for human rights violations, end unconditional military aid to Israel and engage with all Palestinian factions, including Hamas.
