In regards to Sandra Gander's letter expressing approval of the Bowe Bergdahl prisoner exchange, there is an old saying about walking in someone's shoes before commenting.
No one asked for Private Bergdahl to be "Captain America." All that was asked is a minimum of courage and obedience to the military code.
Desertion and going AWOL is not part of that code.
As a veteran I find the exchange for the equivalence of five four-star generals of the opposition for one deserter not only wrong but also an insult to every serving soldier past and present.
Simply volunteering to serve, i.e. joining up, is not an excuse to delinquency of duty.
The military is not some social experiment, and it is the very serious job of protecting America from its enemies. As a veteran I look forward to a trial and Bergdahl's conviction for desertion in a combat zone, which is a capital offense.
