According to the May 29 Herald, Bradenton Police Chief Michael Radzilowski is seeking a grant from the Department of Justice. This grant will be for $27,000 to be used as a down payment for the Shotspotter system.
It is amazing how government's eyes light up when they hear the word "grant." It is like free money; however, the taxpayer will be on the hook for $450,000. Not free money!
On Long Island they have a similar system which, to my knowledge, has never made an arrest or taken away a gun. Do you really think a shooter will stand around after he fires a weapon?
The only thing the Shotspotter system is good for is it will give an accurate time and place of the gunshot. This is very helpful for taking a report.
Never miss a local story.
How many police officers could you hire for $450,000? Five or six? They can do more than take reports and might even run into a shooter.
Instead of a gadget, let's turn to flesh and blood with a brain. You might get more bang for your buck.
