Global climate change is the greatest threat mankind has ever faced. It is on a par with the great mass extinctions of millions of years ago
But this time, since we are causing it, we must be the ones who will halt its progress.
We do not have time to waste. Let's make this the year we elect representatives who will address this issue. As Americans, we must lead the world to a solution.
I propose that we ask anyone running for office this fall (at the federal, state, or local levels) to make the following pledge:
Never miss a local story.
"In light of the near 100 percent consensus of the scientific community, in light of the widespread, catastrophic effects on the weather we have already observed, and in light of the dire predictions by climate scientists for the future; I make the following pledge: If elected I will work diligently to pass legislation to reduce the use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and to replace them with renewable sources of energy which do not add to global warming or climate change."
Obviously it will be very difficult to overcome the entrenched financial interests of the coal, oil, and natural gas industries. But, if we are to survive, our society must move on to alternative sources of energy.
Yes, you and I can do something to solve this greatest threat to mankind. We can promise to vote in this fall's midterm elections. And, we can promise to vote only for those politicians who will make the pledge to rigorously address climate change.
To better understand the consequences of inaction, watch Episode 12 of Cosmos 9 p.m. June 1 on Fox 13, WTVT. Internationally acclaimed scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson will be explaining this issue from a non-political, scientific prospective.
