On May 26, America celebrated Memorial Day. From the American Revolution to the Afghanistan/Iraq wars, American men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice on foreign battlefields to preserve our freedom and independence.
But America is not free nor is it independent when it concerns energy independence!
On Oct. 17, 1973, OPEC enacted an oil embargo against the United States. President Richard M. Nixon responded by addressing the nation on Nov. 25, 1973, concerning the crisis and how we, as Americans, could rise to the challenge stating:
"Let me conclude by restating our overall objective. It can be summed up in one word that best characterizes this nation and its essential nature. That word is 'independence.'
Never miss a local story.
"From its beginning 200 years ago throughout its history, America has made great sacrifices of blood and also of treasure to achieve and maintain its independence. In the last third of this century, our independence will depend on maintaining and achieving self-sufficiency in energy.
"What I have called Project Independence 1980 is a series of plans and goals set to ensure that by the end of this decade, Americans will not have to rely on any source of energy beyond our own."
Our OPEC oil addiction remains!
Last year (2013), Americans spent more on OPEC oil ($147 billion) than for our veterans ($140 billion) or education ($72 billion)! And yet, under President Obama, our dependence on foreign oil is at a 20-year low.
