(Editor's note: This letter addresses the Legislature's bill to handicap the direct retail sale of beer from microbreweries to consumers.)
The proposed penalty on small independent brewers is, to me, a local symbol of what is currently a serious threat to the U.S. economy.
We have gone from a country that flourished through the efforts of brave entrepreneurs who opened small businesses to one that punishes them for their efforts and hands out subsidies and other unearned revenue and financial benefits to businesses big enough to have lobbyists on their payroll.
It's gotten bigger, too. Take, for example, Elon Musk and his hyperloop. It is almost inarguably the greatest possible advancement in technology since the invention of the computer.
What happened? He gave it to the world for free and immediately the automotive, gas, and other companies went to work feebly trying to discredit it and successfully trying to bury it. Most people don't even know what it is.
Good ideas and good businesses are being penalized and politically assassinated to the point where fruition is basically impossible. The local craft brewers are just another example.
I love my country and one of the reasons is our ability to evolve. We are a country of people who want to make life better for ourselves and our children. Our ability to do that is based on freedom.
If you take away a level playing field of business, you take our freedom. You disallow the next great thing, You stop the evolution towards a better life for everyone.
Just my two cents.
