Response to the Miami Herald's "Do they care?" editorial, published in the Bradenton/Lakewood Ranch Herald on Wednesday:
We care so much that we have been working tirelessly to make the case for more support. We partnered with Casey Family Programs, the nation's largest operating foundation focused entirely on improving child welfare systems, to provide expert analysis on investigative services and practices.
From these findings, we are implementing new protocols to keep children safe.
In response to that report, the governor's proposed budget will put hundreds more boots on the ground and better enable our child welfare servants to do their job and spend more time with at-risk families -- an historic response to an urgent need.
DCF is committed to protecting Florida
children, and the governor has led this effort by meeting with child protective investigators, legislators and child advocates pushing for these needed resources.
We must do what it takes to protect our children, and we're working closely with the Legislature to provide the resources needed to keep Florida's children safe.
Esther Jacobo, Interim Secretary, Florida Department of Children and Families
