Guns, guns, guns ... we're debating the wrong issue.
We've seen many articles and many letters to the editor regarding the issues surrounding citizen gun-toting.
We have some who feel we're headed to a replay of the OK Corral, while others feel that arming citizens is the only way to protect themselves in an increasingly violent and drug-saturated society.
The fact is many people are arming themselves, like it or not. The fact is thousands across the nation are buying guns who never gave them a thought before all the uproar.
It seems the anti-gun folks have sort of "shot themselves in the foot" with all their rhetoric about controlling and making the purchase of guns illegal.
Stopping the arming of our citizens and moderating the current surge of gun buying is simply not going to happen soon, if ever, so let's focus on something we can do -- education and training.
I would offer that we make the training and educating of "good guys with guns" a high priority. We aren't going to take everyone's guns away, so let's make them safer carriers of guns.
If we have good guys with guns skilled in their use, fewer "gun-free" zones, and a media that publicizes the many, many incidents across the country where good guys with guns have saved lives, we will see less of these violent events that have plagued us for a long, long time.
I think even the pro-guns folks, if asked, will agree with me that arming citizens is an even better idea if we assure that these armed citizens are well trained and educated in gun handling and are required to attend continuing education as a requirement for continued carry.
