In an effort to avoid a theocracy, described by Webster's collegiate dictionary as 1. A state, policy, or group of people that claims a deity as its ruler, 2. Government by a priestly class claiming to have divine authority, as in the Papacy.
Amendment 1 to the Constitution states, in part, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
Section 1 of article II of the U.S. Constitution should be used as a guide to prohibit all elected civil servants from violating article 1 of the Constitution by the establishment or incursion of religion in any level of government. That is, include it in the oath of office.
PS: Abortion and anti-gay/lesbian opinions are both religious matters and have no place in the legislative process.
