Maybe it's time to put the brakes on raising Florida's speed limits on our interstates and rural roadways. Like so much other bad legislation being enacted across the country lately, this is not something the public is asking for.
Law enforcement, the AAA, and other traffic safety advocates agree that this is a bad idea. Raising the speed limits will only make our roads more dangerous, leading to more accidents, and more fatalities.
And Florida's overcrowded interstates along with our older population will only exacerbate the problem.
So, ask yourself, "Who really benefits from raising the speed limits?"
Higher speed limits mean greater fuel consumption. Greater fuel consumption means more profits for the oil companies.
And this comes at a time when we should be doing everything we can do to reduce the use of fossil fuels. We can't let them get away with this.
Politicians in Tallahassee may also think that raising speed limits might give them a boost in this fall's election. We need to let them know that this is not the case.
Call, write or e-mail your representatives today. Let them know that raising Florida's speed limits is a detriment to our safety, our economy, and our environment.
