In a recent records request for a renewable energy policy for Manatee County I was informed by the county that it is not mandated to have a renewable energy policy. Subsequent requests at commissioners' meetings have fallen on deaf ears. Manatee County commissioners should at least follow the federal renewable energy policies in place. Renewable energy installs would create great paying local jobs and increase our tax base and local spending because of these jobs. This would be a win-win for local solar companies and their employees.
Currently, the federal government gets 7 percent of its electricity from renewables. President Obama gave federal agencies milestones to meet: at least 10 percent renewables in 2015... at least 15 percent in 2016-2017... at least 17.5 percent in 2018-2019... at least 20 percent in 2020 and after.
It is inconceivable that our current Board of County Commissioners would not even consider a renewable energy policy. After all we are the Sunshine State. Such noncompliance of not even considering a renewable energy policy is unacceptable. We as citizens and taxpayers of Manatee County deserve better. We the citizens are not mandated to reelect them either.
