Last night (Jan. 20) we went to the Manatee Performing Arts Center to see the Manatee Players’ production of “Nine.”
Our group of five couples have been attending on the second Saturday night performance for almost 30 years. When the theater was downtown and parking was terrible, and inside facilities were to say the least inadequate, the plays were good.
They needed a bigger place and raised the money. Something since then has gotten terribly wrong. First it was the parking, next the sound, now the play selection. The executive board must be held liable. It’s a beautiful state-of-the-art theater. They forgot that those who attend the play are the ones who pay to see them. I suggested they go to Sarasota to the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe. Great sound, great talent.
I believe the Players are trying to do too much. Both Stone Hall and the other theater are too much. The sound system is still very bad. I can go on, but it will not help. We walked out of “Nine” at intermission. After this season we will not be renewing. When the board sees the theater not even half full and does nothing then we need to put new people in charge.
Never miss a local story.
