Years late -- and well past the promised due date -- the Palmetto Little League finally took to their new ballfields this week with a dedication ceremony and a game at Blackstone Park.
With three regulation Little League fields, covered dugouts, bleachers, batting cages and a concession stand and pressbox, the long-suffering Palmetto league is set for years to come.
Just how long have various entities literally dropped the ball on the new fields? Since the league gave up its old diamonds in 2009 to make way for a new Palmetto Elementary School. The promise of new fields came then, a pledge they'd be ready for play the spring of 2010.
Betsy Sanders got to enjoy the dedication with her 10-year-old son, Jack, decked out in his uniform. Her reaction, in a Tuesday report by the Herald's Amaris Castillo, spoke volumes:
Never miss a local story.
"I thought it was the wind that was making my eyes tear but I'm thinking 'You know, maybe it's a little of mixed emotions here.' I'm really proud to see it come to fruition."
