Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed 45 other bills nine days ago and finished his work this week on bills passed during the 2013 legislative session. More than 150 new laws went into effect Monday. Of particular note:
SB 1664 corrected a terrible flaw in teacher evaluations. Now, at least half of a classroom teacher or school administrator performance review must be based on student growth or achievement under their instruction or direction.
This eliminated the highly objectionable policy that teachers would be judged based on students who never attended their classes.
Some Anna Maria Island residents will appreciate this but others will not. SB 342 allows property owners with homestead exemptions to rent out their residences for 30 days and still retain their tax break.
Never miss a local story.
Slow drivers, beware. HB 7125 prohibits motorists in the left lane from going 10 mph slower than the speed limit when faster vehicles are overtaking them. No more blocking traffic and potentially creating road rage incidents.
