Fresh on the heels of last week's editorial on the disturbing trend in the human trafficking of children into the sex trade, Gov. Rick Scott announced this week that he wants a $4.5 million appropriation to fight these crimes and help victims recover.
Under Florida's Safe Harbor Act, signed into law by Scott last June, victims of sex trafficking are not charged with prostitution but placed into treatment programs instead -- as they should. The new money would create 30 rape crisis centers around the state as well as safe houses where victims can rehabilitate. Cheers to the governor for seeking this humane and vital lifeline to those trapped in the sex trade.
