He was supposed to be watching his 2-year-old son, but a Clay County man was high on heroin and now his son is dead, according to reports.
Ashley Smart, 41, of Fleming Island, is facing aggravated manslaughter charges after his son drowned in a pool, according to WJXT, a Jacksonville television news station. Smart was supposed to be watching his son, but was high on heroin.
The boy, Aiden, was found unresponsive in the family’s swimming pool and was taken to the hospital Tuesday morning, according to WJXT.
However, Aiden was in “full cardiac failure,” WJXT reported, and died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Officials found heroin and marijuana in Smart’s home during the investigation into the boy’s death, along with drug paraphernalia, according to WJXT.
The Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident, according to WJXT.
Smart is being held on a bond of $227,500 for charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child, marijuana possession not more than 12 grams and possession of heroin, according to jail records.
