If it wasn't for the extra miles one has to drive to get to the island, commuters wouldn't know the Anna Maria Bridge was closed for three days.

Traffic flow has been smooth since the Florida Department of Transportation closed the bridge at midnight Sunday, forcing drivers to detour from Manatee Avenue West to Cortez Road to get to their favorite island spots.

"There's been no real problems," said Sgt. Lenard Diaz, of the Bradenton Beach Police. "Traffic off of and onto the Cortez Bridge has been moving pretty steady."

Audrey Clarke, spokeswoman for the bridge project, said Wednesday the rehabilitation work has been progressing on schedule.

Workers with Quinn Construction are in the first stage of hydro-demolition of the concrete surface of the bridge, Clarke said.

They will remove two-inches of worn or deteriorated concrete with high-pressure water hoses from the bridge roadway and replace it with a new concrete surface.

"Everything so far seems to be going pretty good," Clark said.

She also mentioned that since the closure there has been a lot of people stopping by to watch the construction work.

"We understand these activities are interesting to watch, but we're asking residents, visitors, business owners, bicyclists and more, not to approach the bridge due to safety concerns," Clarke said.
