A Manatee County citizens committee charged with vetting applicants for the school district's top job whittled the field Thursday from 25 to 11 candidates.

Even before the committee met, one candidate had already withdrawn his application. They also received two more applications after the Monday deadline.

In Thursday's meeting, each of the remaining candidates was assigned to a committee member who will be doing background checks and conducting interviews with references and co-workers.

A discrepancy about a candidate's resume - who is on the narrowed list - also surfaced in the meeting, a matter the committee chose to discuss in another meeting next week.

Aaron Mackey, of Mason, Ohio, wrote that he is still the superintendent of Princeton City School District in Ohio, a job he got in 2004.

According to a news release from that district, the Princeton City school board in January unanimously voted against renewing Mackey's contract, which expired July 31.

Mackey sent his application to Manatee twice, the latest packet dated Sept. 3. His resume still listed him as the superintendent of that district.

He could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The district received two more applications after the deadline, with the approval of School Board Chairwoman Barbara Harvey.

Though John F. O'Sullivan Jr.'s application came in a day late, it was postmarked on an earlier date. The Jacksonville resident's application package had a wrong ZIP code.

Another candidate, Salli Price Welsh, of Los Altos, Calif., faxed her application Monday, but almost did not qualify. The board, in job advertisements and brochures, required applicants to mail their resume packets.

Welsh argued she heard about the job from her friends and did not see or receive any of the ads or brochures. The district's Web site did not specify that applications had to be mailed, she told Harvey.

Welsh is an assistant superintendent in the Sutter County Office of Education in Yuba City, Calif., and holds a doctorate degree. She did not make the trim to 11 on Thursday.

One application has been withdrawn, however.

Alberto M. Carvalho, an associate superintendent of Miami-Dade schools, was named as the new superintendent at both the Miami-Dade and Pinellas school districts Wednesday. As of Thursday, he had not announced which offer he would accept.

Another candidate, Nicholas M. Gledich, an assistant superintendent at Orange County schools, was also a top three finalist in the Pinellas superintendent search.

The citizens committee will be meeting Sept. 18. The committee and Wayne Blanton, of the Florida School Board Association, will pitch their top five candidates to the school board Sept. 23. The board is scheduled to pick its favorites the next day. A finalist is expected to be named in mid-October.
