The inevitable smash hit “New Moon” is expected to take a juicy bite of the box office around the world this weekend.

Locally, fans of the Twilight film series are lining up today to watch both “Twilight” and the newest film, “Twilight Saga: New Moon,” which opens tonight at midnight.

As of Wednesday, ticket sales were soaring at Royal Palm 20 Cinemas. Rumors circulated that three of its theaters were already filled. Management wouldn’t confirm the number, but said tickets for the show are still available.

But if you’re planning on being the first to see “New Moon,” you better get tickets soon.

Fanfare over the film is sky-high among area teens. Earlier this week, about 30 teenagers were dying to talk about “Twilight” during Central Library’s “New Moon” discussion.

“They were all extremely excited about the movie coming out,” said Melanie Hensey, adult and young adult librarian. “Like ants were in their pants.”

The group talked about the “Twilight” books series, watched a trailer of the new film and even took sides on which character would win the heart of lead character Bella.

The consensus was split between the Edward and Jacob camps.

About half of teens, who ranged from eighth- to 12th-graders, said they would wait to see “New Moon” in theaters after past experiences with the “Twilight” opening.

“They were afraid of the crowds,” Hensey said. “There was so much noise and excitement, they couldn’t hear anything.”
