MANATEE — There were few leads Wednesday in the investigation of the shooting of a teenage boy while he was playing soccer with friends in his front yard.

The 17-year-old boy was shot just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, while playing in the 5900 block of Sixth Street East, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies say the victim and his friends were playing soccer when they heard a gunshot, and while they ran for cover, they heard two more shots.

The victim realized he had been hit on his left side and asked his friends to call for help.

The bullet exited about 3 inches from where it had entered, according to the sheriff’s office. The victim was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

There are possibly two suspects in the shooting, but sheriff’s investigators have very little to go on, sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said. “The details here are very sketchy,” he said. “The witnesses did not a get a look at anyone.”

Among the details not known is what type of gun was used, since shell casings or other evidence was not recovered.

Bristow said the shooting is still under investigation, but a motive for the shooting is unknown. It it is unclear if the teen was the intended target or not.
