MANATEE — A 49-year-old Bradenton man was killed early Sunday after he walked away from a crash on Interstate 75 but then was struck by another vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The chain reaction accident in the northbound lanes of I-75 at mile marker 223 started at 12:45 a.m. when the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet SUV traveled off the roadway and onto the inside shoulder. He abruptly steered to the right, crossing over the northbound lanes. He then overcorrected to the left and overturned several times before coming to rest partially in the left and center lanes, according to FHP.
A second vehicle traveling north, a 2008 Chevrolet, struck the rear of the SUV.
After the collision, the driver and passenger in the second vehicle, who both had minor injuries, got out of the car and walked to the inside shoulder of I-75.
The driver of a third vehicle, a 2009 Nissan, was in the left lane and failed to slow down as it approached the crash scene. The driver veered to the left and traveled off the roadway and onto the inside shoulder and struck the passenger of the second vehicle, FHP said.
George E. Jepsen, 49, of the 2800 block of 14th Street West, Bradenton, suffered fatal injuries, according to FHP.
The driver of the first vehicle, a 28-year-old Madeira Beach man, suffered serious injuries. The driver of the third vehicle, a 29-year-old Sarasota man, suffered minor injuries.
Clerk hurt in robbery at gas station
MANATEE — A female clerk at a gas station was injured early Sunday morning when she was pistol whipped during a robbery, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The robbery happened about 2:45 a.m. at the Uppy’s BP station in the 7200 block of U.S. 41 North.
One of the two suspects threw a bag of peanuts onto the counter, and the clerk rang it up. The suspects then pulled a gun and demanded the clerk open the register. She said she couldn’t since she had just rung up the peanuts, according to the sheriff’s office.
The other suspect then went behind the counter and also demanded she open the register. The gunman then pulled the gun’s trigger several times, but it did not fire, the sheriff’s office said.
The other suspect then took the gun and hit the clerk on the left side of her head. He then opened a cabinet and grabbed a carton of cigarettes. The two suspects then fled.
Paramedics treated the clerk for her injuries on the scene.
The first suspect was described as standing 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, with short black hair. The second suspect was described as standing 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds.
They were both wearing all black clothing.
Man loses van to two carjackers
MANATEE — Two assailants carjacked a man’s minivan early Sunday morning, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
The 24-year-old victim was arriving at his residence at the Oakwood apartments in the 900 block of 21st Street East, Palmetto, when he was approached from behind by the two suspects. They told him to empty his pockets and set the items on the ground, according to the sheriff’s office.
