MANATEE — A panel of experts will hold a forum to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness month from 4 to 6 p.m. today in the Selby Auditorium at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

Keynote speaker Fawn T. Ngo, assistant professor of criminology, and the panel will discuss trends in handling domestic violence, assess current policies and look at the power of public awareness and social change.

A reception will follow the forum. A sculpture by local artist Ed Miracle, “Battered Woman Syndrome,” will be on display.

Cancer lecture series begins today at Blake

MANATEE — A free lecture series developed by the American Cancer Society, “I Can Cope,” begins at 11 a.m. today at Blake Medical Center’s new Cancer Resource Room in the Blake Medical Arts Building, Suite 3400.

The 13-part lecture series begins with a presentation, “Learning About Cancer,” by Dr. Robert Whorf, a medical oncologist at Blake Medical Center.

The series will cover a variety of topics for newly diagnosed cancer patients and their caregivers, including defining cancer and treatment options, nutrition, coping psychologically and more.

Classes are held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first and third Thursday of the month through April and will include lunch. To register, call (888) 359-3552.

The Cancer Resource Room offers exercise classes, lectures and support groups specifically designed for cancer patients.

Health fair to focus on Latino health concerns

MANATEE — The Manatee County Health Department and Healthy Start Manatee, Inc., will host a free health fair intended to raise awareness about health issues in the Latino community from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Pride Park, 815 63rd Ave. E.

No appointments are necessary.

Health screenings and services will range from cholesterol education and testing to blood pressure, diabetes and HIV/AIDs. Food will be provided for those who participate in a variety of services and prizes will be awarded as raffles at the end of the event.

Diocese youth to walk for their faith

SARASOTA — Local youth and their families will be walking to make a difference in people’s lives from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota. Sponsored by the Missions Office of the Diocese of Venice, portions of the proceeds will go to aid various missions. Manatee Hope hosting benefit barbecue

MANATEE — The second annual Manatee Hope Benefit BBQ will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at Palma Sola Botanical Park.

The event includes dinner, entertainment by “Sister Act” and a silent auction. The cost is $50 and benefits Manatee Hope, an organization that provides therapy and case management services for children and adults who are under-insured or indigent.

Adopt-a-Family of Manatee application period set

MANATEE — Adopt-a-Family of Manatee County, which provides Christmas gifts for low-income families, will take applications from qualified county residents Nov. 2 through Nov. 20.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the Sarasota Bradenton Commerce Center, 7445 15th St. E., Building 7455, Suite 111.

Families must bring photo IDs and valid Social Security cards for all family members, or proof of legal U.S. residency, proof of residency in Manatee County, birth certificates for all children, proof of all income (all subsidys or financial aid), and proof teenagers are attending high school (i.e. school ID, report card).
