Manatee schools to host special night

PALMETTO — The Manatee County school district will hold a Post-Secondary Education Night for parents and students seeking information about life beyond high school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Manatee Convention Center.

As many as 100 universities, colleges, vocational/technical schools, community colleges and military academies will send representatives to speak about application, enrollment, costs of a college education, financial aid and scholarship assistance.

For the first time, representatives from seven public high schools will be on hand to speak to middle school students and their families about academic opportunities available.

Walk for Food Allergy event set for Oct. 24

SARASOTA — The community’s first Walk for Food Allergy event will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 24 at Payne Park, 2050 Adams Lane.

About one in 25 people suffers from deadly food allergies. The walk aims to raise awareness and funds to research a cure. The event will be one of 35 across the country in October as part of the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network’s sixth annual coast-to-coast walk.

Participants will walk two miles. Check-in will begin at 8 a.m. the day of the event.

13th Avenue to close for sewer work

BRADENTON — For a few hours Tuesday, 13th Avenue West will be closed to vehicles as a city of Bradenton Public Works Department crew repairs a sanitary sewer line in the road.

The work is scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. A contact with the city is Grant Daniels at 708-6300.

Sheriff Steube to address Myakka City action group

EAST MANATEE — Sheriff Brad Steube will be the guest speaker for the Myakka City Action Committee’s general membership meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Myakka Family Worship Center, 33410 Singletary Road, Myakka City.

Boys & Girls Clubs get Bank of America grant

BRADENTON — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County received a $5,000 grant from Bank of America.

The award will be used to continue youth prevention programs aimed at combating community risk factors.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County serves more than 3,000 young people at five locations.

Buchanan sets town hall Friday at Van Wezel

SARASOTA — Congressman Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, will hold a town hall meeting to discuss health care, jobs and the economy Friday.

The meeting at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, will be the ninth in a series of town meetings Buchanan has held throughout the district this year.

His staff asked that attendees RSVP to Buchanan’s Sarasota office at 941.951.6643.
