MANATEE — Manatee County school district officials will meet today to discuss how to handle President Barack Obama’s speech to the nation’s schoolchildren.
The address at 1 p.m. Tuesday will be transmitted live via the White House’s Web site.
Some critics are calling for parents to withhold their children from school that day to avoid being “indoctrinated” by the president.
“Our leadership team will be meeting to discuss this issue (today),” school district spokeswoman Margi Nanney said in an e-mail.
“We have received a few phone calls about this today.
“We feel the President’s message will be a very positive one and appreciate his concern for education. I am sure we will carefully consider this (today) as we address how we’ll handle President Obama’s address to schools next week,” Nanney said.
