PALMETTO — Police invited families to attend National Night Out activities 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Boys and Girls Club of Palmetto, 1600 10th St. W.

Planned are a barbecue and children’s activities, Police Chief Garry Lowe said.

“This event will celebrate our community coming together and showing our collective commitment to a safe and crime-free city,” Lowe said in a press release.

Jeff Beckley named BPD honor officer

BRADENTON — Legwork on two cases resulted in Bradenton Police Department Officer Jeff Beckley being named officer of the month for August, the department announced.

Beckley’s work following a burglary at a business in the 4900 block of Cortez Road in June led to identification of two suspects, the department said.

Also in June, his stop of a red-light runner led to an arrest of a juvenile suspected of stealing the car from a city council member’s residence.

Beckley has served the department since 2002. He is assigned to Patrol Operations and is a member of the department’s SWAT Team. He was nominated for the honor by District II Zone 6 Commander, Lt. William Fowler; and Zone 4 Commander, Lt. Keith Davis.
