MANATEE — A Rubonia woman accused of stabbing a 72-year-old relative this week remained behind bars Tuesday after having her bond set at $20,000.
Earlier in the day, Carrie May McMillian, 61, of the 7000 block of 11th Avenue East, appeared before Circuit Judge Janette Dunnigan on an aggravated battery charge. Dunnigan set McMillian’s bond and said that if she posts bail, she is not permitted to contact the victim.
Sheriff’s spokesman Dave Bristow said detectives may never determine what motivated the late Monday morning attack at the victim’s home in the 1500 block of 71st Street East in Rubonia.
“It’s unclear what started the disagreement, she (McMillian) refused to discuss the incident,” Bristow said.
Just before 11 a.m. Monday, McMillian visited the victim’s home and the two got into a disagreement, according to a probable cause affidavit released Tuesday.
McMillian then reportedly stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife in the cheek and near the ribs.
Deputies said the victim sustained multiple defensive wounds to her hands. She was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.
Deputies apprehended McMillian several minutes later after they found her at the Rubonia Social Club. She had changed her shirt, the report stated, and deputies found a bloody shirt in a trash can behind a nearby house.
The victim’s brother, Louis Murrell, said the two women had not been getting along for some time.
Court papers show the victim sought legal protection from McMillian on June 12 but a judge denied her a domestic violence injunction.
In her petition, the victim said that McMillian was a blood relative who threatened to kill her. She also wrote that McMillian parked her car in front of her home, repeatedly blew the car horn and told the victim she paid someone to kill her.
An injunction cannot be issued based on a future threat, Circuit Judge Marc Gilner wrote in his order.
